West Winds in Concert 2005

Olympic Fanfare & Theme and Bugler's Dream
John Williams arr. Jim Curnow

Commissioned by the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Committee, this work by John Williams became an instant classic.

Fiesta !
Philip Sparke

Fiesta! was commissioned by the United States Army Field Band to celebrate their 50th Anniversary.

An American Elegy
Frank Ticheli

An American Elegy is, above all, an expression of hope.

It was composed in memory of those who lost their lives at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999, and to honor the survivors.

It is offered as a tribute to their great strength and courage in the face of a terrible tragedy.

The Sorcerer' s Apprentice
Paul Dukas arr. Mark H. Hindsley

This famous orchestral symphonic poem was perhaps even made more famous with its inclusion in Walt Disney’s Fantasia,  in which we see Mickey Mouse in a rather watery situation.

This 1897 composition was based on a ballad (poem) written by Goethe about an old sorcerer who departs his workshop, leaving his apprentice with chores to perform.

To Walk With Wings
Julie Giroux

To Walk With Wings, Fanfare & Overture, is a musical epic of man’s quest for flight.

From the early beginnings of cloth and wooden wings through the exploration of space, this highly programmatic piece takes the listener on a musical tour through aeronautic history.

Polovetsian Dances From "Prince Igor"
Alexander Borodin arr. Mark H. Hindsley

Polovtsian Dances is a small set of dances in the opera - Prince Igor, which is often performed on its own by many orchestras all over the world.

Nuovo Cinema Paradiso
Ennio Morricone arr. Kleine Schaars P.

The soundtrack to this Oscar-winning film (Best Foreign Language Film in 1989) tells the story of the return of a successful film director, Salvatore, to his native Sicilian village for the funeral of his old friend Alfredo, who was the projectionist at the local “Cinema Paradiso”.

Ride !
Samuel L. Hazo

The inspiration to write this piece came about when the composer was being driven along the Indiana countryside in the car belonging to fellow composer, conductor and friend Jack Stamp, at top speed, in all the fifteen minutes it took to travel from the Indiana University campus to the Stamp residence.
